Record Cactus League Attendance and Record Revenue
Not only were ticket window receipts up,
sponsorship revenues also increased across the board

√ In Mesa, home of the 2003 National League Champion Chicago Cubs, attendance surged a whopping 42% and sponsorship revenues increased 14%.
√ In Peoria, home of the Seattle Mariners and the San Diego Padres, attendance rose over 12% and sponsorship revenues increased 12%.
√ In Surprise, home of the Texas Rangers and the Kansas City Royals, attendance rose almost 11% and sponsorship revenues also increased 11%.
“We saw more sponsors creating programs that spanned multiple Cactus League facilities” attested Darryl Toupkin, President of FieldWorks Events & Marketing, Inc. (FieldWorks exclusively manages the sponsorships for Mesa, Peoria and Surprise, and works with the Giants, A’s and Brewers.) “Companies like Windermere Real Estate, CBS SportsLine.com, Papa John’s and Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) advertised a multiple Cactus League stadiums. In the past, most advertisers were at just one stadium.”
There are also more national advertisers getting involved than ever before. In the past Cactus League advertisers have predominantly been local companies looking to increase their exposure to spring training visitors, but this is changing as the Cactus League gets more television coverage.
Five of the spring training games in Mesa were televised, including ESPN coverage of Chicago Cubs Spring Training opening day. This was the first time that ESPN has televised a Cactus League game in favor of the Grapefruit League in Florida - a trend that Cactus League organizers hope continues. Of the thirteen televised games from the Peoria Sports Complex, one was ESPN, four games were televised in Japan, and four were beamed to the Pacific Northwest.
“Cactus League Spring Training Baseball is an ideal fit for Windermere because the games stimulate local business while providing Windermere local and national exposure,” said Jeanne Grainger, president of Windermere Real Estate in Arizona. “Our marketing campaign includes a Windermere banner in many of the stadiums, which is shown repeatedly on sports highlights in all the team’s hometowns, plus on network broadcasts.”
Many companies, including Windermere, are including a community and charitable giving aspect to their sponsorships. In each community, Windermere presented a check at one home game to a local non-profit organization. The media got involved too - KDKB’s Tim & Mark did an on-air auction of Cubs memorabilia to help raise money for local charities supported by the Cubs. With this and their annual food drive / auction, the Cubs Wives were able to donate over $11,300 to Paz de Cristo in Mesa.
“It’s great to see spring training make such a difference in our community,” summarized Toupkin. “Great season attendance, more room nights, increased tourism revenues and support for our local charities. What more can we ask? Other than for the Cubs to win the World Series this year, of course “
About FieldWorks Events & Marketing, Inc.
Based in Scottsdale, the principal of FieldWorks Events & Marketing Inc. has been working with Cactus League spring training baseball for over 12 years. At present, FieldWorks has established relationships with the majority of Cactus League spring training venues in the valley.

FieldWorks Events & Marketing Inc. raises $25,000 for Charity
FieldWorks president sets annual corporate fund-raising goal
Scottsdale, Arizona. September 22, 2003 - FieldWorks Events & Marketing Inc. (FieldWorks) is proud to announce they have raised over $25,000 this year for charity - supporting research and patient services offered by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society; the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
In celebration of his 10 years as a cancer survivor and the 5th anniversary of FieldWorks, Darryl Toupkin, the president and founder of FieldWorks, made charitable giving and fund-raising an integral part of the corporate mission. Toupkin personally pledged to raise at least $5,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society - the cost of a single treatment for Hodgkin’s lymphoma - and exceeded that pledge by over double.
Most recently, FieldWorks donated management assistance and staff to produce the Hooters Golf Classic - a charity golf tournament held on September 4th. Despite inclement weather, the tournament successfully raised over $15,000 for the Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
Despite the fact that FieldWorks’ core business is working with non-profits to support their fund-raising events, Toupkin felt that it was important for FieldWorks to do its part.

FieldWorks provides event management & consulting, sponsorship procurement and public relations services, primarily to non-profit organizations and their fund-raising events. Clients include the Mesa HoHoKams, Tempe Sister Cities Corporation, Tempe AZ Rotary Clubs, Voices Take Flight and the City of Peoria.
